AT THE BRINK OF DISASTER
THE PAST CENTURY HAS CERTAINLY experienced its share of disasters. Over 83 million lives have been lost in the first two world wars alone. Approximately two million people died in the Korean War, over one million in the Vietnam conflict, as many as 200,000 in the first Gulf War, and countless others in the numerous conflicts continuing to rage around our world today.
Most notably in recent history, the disaster of 9/11 revealed the vulnerability of the United States to outside attack. Three thousand Americans lost their lives that day as terrorists targeted the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and even unsuccessfully aimed at the White House in what could only be considered an act of war. However, unlike past wars, today’s acts of terror no longer involve land or governmental expansion. According to conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, “This is a religious war...There is no room for compromise in a religious war...no room for ‘settlement.’ ”
Today, terrorist groups continue to infiltrate, irritate, and make their influence known in Western nations. According to Newsweek’s article “Terror in Our Time,” there has instead been an increase in terrorist attacks and major threats since the world’s turning point at 9/11. A few examples include:
April 11, 2002: Truck bomb explodes outside a synagogue in Tunisia.
June 14, 2002: Car-bomber attacks American Consulate building in Karachi, Pakistan, killing 11 people.
March 11, 2004: In a sophisticated attack, terrorists set off bombs in four crowded Madrid commuter trains...191 people are killed and more than 1,700 are injured.
August 11, 2006: British authorities uncover an alleged plot to explode bombs on ten airliners traveling from Britain to the United States. The alleged bombers would smuggle liquid explosives onboard disguised as beverages and other common objects. Twenty-four people are detained for questioning.

Dr. Tim LaHaye earned a doctor of ministry degree from Western Theological Seminary and an honorary doctor of literature degree from Liberty University. For twenty-five years he pastored one of the nation's outstanding churches in San Diego, which grew to three locations. During that time he founded two accredited Christian high schools, a Christian school system of ten schools, and Christian Heritage College.

Ed Hindson is the Assistant Chancellor and Dean of the Institute of Biblical Studies at Liberty University in Virginia. He also serves as the speaker on The King Is Coming telecast and has authored and served as general editor for numerous books. He holds a D.Min. from Westminster Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from the University of South Africa.
